Life of a Dancer

At the tender age of three, her mother signed her up for piano lessons. She didn't know what she was interested in but did as told. At the arts school, while her mother was at the counter signing her up, she wandered off herself. She came upon this bright room where many big girls were dancing and her eyes glued onto the room of girls. Her mother soon came running for her.

"I want to dance, mummy. Can I?" Her mother was shocked by her words. Her mother, herself, didn't know what her daughter wants either. Immediately her eyes lit up with excitment and went to sign her up again. This time, for ballet.

She went in the big bright room with eagerness. She liked her shoes, her leotard and her polka dotted skirt. She was shy, though, so she sat in one corner. The teacher came over and said, "Don't be shy, you'll get to meet lots of friends!" Her first lesson started.

She kept changing teachers until she was in Grade 3 then did she get to find her ideal teacher, Mrs. Skipp. Mrs. Skipp was astounded by her flexibility. She didn't have many young students with THAT kind of flexibility. Mrs. Skipp got her to demonstrate lots of stuffs. She was proud of herself. She loved to dance. She seriously did.

Year after year, she was sent for exams, exams and more exams. At barely Grade 6, she was sent for Pre-Elementary examination. An examination that girls take only after Grade 8. She thought certificates could prove everything; her love for dance.

When she finished Grade 8, she was asked to take Elementary. She asked herself: I've danced for so many years, taken so many examinations, but what exactly is the meaning to dance? She asked for a break for a few months. She kept asking herself the same question. What exactly is the meaning to dance?

She continued watching ballet performances by world famous ballet schools. She watched closely at the dancers' expressions. She couldn't seem to see any expressions of pain. Why, she asked herself, why do I always feel pain when I go on pointe? While she was supposed to be studying for her year end major examinations, she was reflecting more deeply on ballet instead. Alas, she found the answer she's been finding for two months. "You do not dance for people. You dance for yourself. There should be happiness in dancing."

The words kept repeating in her mind. She's decided to continue dancing in Australia. She'll continue ballet, tap dance AND modern. To her, her life is all about dance.

And all of a sudden, she's starting to regret she didn't sign up for Laselle SIA.
